Built with GivingTuesday. For the mission-driven organizations using AI to increase impact without compromising values. 54 minutes. Free.
Nonprofit professionals face a question that for-profit owners do not. Not just "how do I use AI to save time?" The deeper one: "how do I use AI without compromising the values that brought me into this work?"
That question is the whole point of this course.
Most AI training treats every organization the same. Efficiency in. Hours out. Done. But mission-driven work has constraints commercial work does not. Donor trust. Beneficiary dignity. Board accountability. Board oversight. The AI tools that save a for-profit team thirty hours a week can quietly damage a nonprofit's mission if deployed without thinking.
Anthropic built this course in partnership with GivingTuesday, the global generosity movement. It draws on research with actual nonprofit professionals about their actual needs, concerns, and aspirations for AI. The course applies the Four D's (Delegation, Description, Discernment, Diligence) specifically to nonprofit fundraising, communications, program delivery, operations, and leadership.
If you lead a mission-driven organization, this is the course built for you.
Free. Under an hour of video. Built in partnership with GivingTuesday. Certificate at the end.
GO TO THE COURSE →Four sections. Nine lectures. One quiz. Certificate at the end. Under an hour of video, which means most nonprofit leaders can finish this in a quiet morning before the work week starts.
Defines AI Fluency and introduces the four interconnected competencies that form the foundation of the entire course: Delegation, Description, Discernment, Diligence.
Practice crafting context-rich prompts and critically evaluating AI outputs through real research and writing examples drawn from nonprofit work.
Make thoughtful decisions about what tasks to delegate to AI while taking responsibility for high-stakes considerations: data privacy, analytical accuracy, and the protection of the people your organization serves.
Apply all four dimensions of the 4D Framework to automate workflows and bring AI into your organization deliberately. Walk out with a working AI workflow and your own AI use policy.

The course is built around the same two practical loops as the Small Business course, but the nonprofit application is different in ways that matter. The values are stricter. The people affected are wider. The consequences of getting it wrong cost donor trust and beneficiary safety, not just margin.
You describe what you want clearly enough that AI can act on it. AI gives you output. You evaluate that output critically before it reaches a donor, a grant officer, or the people your organization serves. Then you iterate.
You do not have a marketing team, a communications director, or a legal counsel reviewing every donor email before it goes out. The Description-Discernment loop is your in-house quality control. The cost of weak discernment is not a typo. It is donor trust, grant compliance, or beneficiary harm.
You are writing a grant application. Description: tell Claude the funder's published priorities, your organization's mission, the specific program, the budget range, and the funder's required format. Add the outcomes data you have. Discernment: read the output. Verify every outcome statistic against your actual numbers. Check that the language fits your organization's voice, not Claude's generic nonprofit voice. Make sure nothing claims more than what you can prove.
Generic AI nonprofit language is a tell. Foundation officers read hundreds of grants a year. They know the cadence of AI-written prose, and they discount it. Your Description has to be specific enough that the output sounds like your organization. Then your Discernment has to be strong enough to catch every place where it does not.
You decide what to hand to AI in the first place (delegation) and what stays with humans. Then you carry responsibility for what AI produced, especially around data privacy and analytical accuracy (diligence).
Beneficiary data, donor data, and program participant data live at the heart of nonprofit work. Delegating analysis of that data to AI without diligence is how nonprofits land in compliance trouble, lose donors, or violate the dignity of the communities they serve. Done right, this loop unlocks real productivity. Done wrong, it can end an organization.
You delegate donor segmentation to AI. Diligence means four things. Redact personally identifying information before any data goes into the prompt. Verify the segmentation logic matches your actual fundraising strategy. Document what you did and why. Keep a human in the loop on any decision that affects how a person is treated. The course walks through what this looks like in real nonprofit operations.
For nonprofits, Diligence is not optional. It is the part of the framework that protects your mission. If you cannot answer the question "what did I verify before AI's output left this organization?" the answer should be: nothing should leave the organization yet.
Anthropic positioned this course for nonprofit staff in five functional areas. Each one has a distinct AI opportunity and a distinct risk profile.
Grant writing is the fastest payoff. Use AI for first drafts of letters of inquiry, full grant applications, donor appeals, and impact reports. Apply heavy Discernment to verify every statistic, claim, and outcome. The output should sound like your organization's voice, not Claude's.
Newsletters, social posts, board updates, press releases, volunteer announcements. AI handles the first draft. You handle the voice, the values check, and the verification.
The most sensitive area. AI can help with intake forms, FAQs, training material drafts, and program documentation. AI should not make decisions about who gets served, what they receive, or how. Diligence here means a human in the loop on every choice that affects a beneficiary.
Vendor research, contract review (with legal verification), policy drafts, internal documentation, meeting notes, calendar coordination. Operations is where you can save the most hours with the lowest risk, if Description and Discernment are tight.
Board reports, strategic planning drafts, communications to funders and partners, scenario analysis. The board members reading these are sophisticated. Generic AI language gets caught immediately. Heavy Description, heavy Discernment, and your name owns every page.
The course was built in partnership between Anthropic and GivingTuesday. GivingTuesday is the global generosity movement that started as a single Tuesday after Thanksgiving. It grew into a year-round data and research organization supporting the social sector. The fact that they co-built this course is the credential.
Directs partnerships for the GivingTuesday Data Commons. Brings ten years of experience across nonprofits and technology companies. Her work focuses on using data to build a more resilient social sector. She is the voice of the sector inside this course.
Leads Claude apps education at Anthropic, including the AI Fluency work. Before Anthropic, she founded and led the customer education team at Notion. She has been on both sides of the table: a teacher in classrooms and a builder of training inside companies.
This is not Anthropic guessing what nonprofits need. It is GivingTuesday telling them, and Anthropic shaping the training.
Four things, concretely.
Under an hour of video. Plan for two hours of total time so you can do the exercises, not just watch them.
Nonprofit budgets do not have room for AI consultants charging Fortune 500 rates. Anthropic built a dedicated track for the nonprofit sector in partnership with GivingTuesday. That is one of the cleanest gifts the technology industry has given the social sector this year. Take it.
