The Four D's are universal, but how they land in the classroom is specific. Here is what each one looks like when you are the one in front of the room.
What you delegate to AI as a teacher decides whether AI helps you teach better or strips out the parts of teaching that should not be replaced. Delegate the drudgery. Keep the judgment.
Rubric drafts. Quiz item generation. Summarizing reading material at different grade levels. Generating example problems. Drafting parent communication boilerplate. Transcribing handwritten student notes.
The lecture itself. Real-time student questions. Grading the high-stakes assessments. The parent conversation when a student is struggling. The recommendation letter. The moment in office hours where you decide what a student actually needs.
A good prompt for an educator is not five words. It is a description of your students, your subject, your standards, your learning objectives, and the format the output needs to land in. Most teacher frustration with AI comes from prompts that are too short and contexts that are too thin.
"Generate three short-answer questions for a 10th-grade chemistry unit on stoichiometry. Reading level: 9th-10th grade. Each question should require students to set up the calculation, not just compute. Provide an answer key with two common student mistakes per question."
That prompt produces classroom-ready material. A vague prompt produces something you spend longer fixing than writing from scratch.
AI confidently produces wrong answers, made-up citations, and content that drifts off the standard you are teaching to. Teacher discernment is the muscle that catches the gap before it lands in front of a student.
You are still the teacher. Your name is on the syllabus, the rubric, the assessment, and the report card. AI assistance does not transfer that responsibility. Diligence in the classroom means knowing what AI helped you make and being able to defend every part of it.
For high-stakes work, that means: the assessment items got verified, the rubric got reviewed, the feedback you send students got read in full before it went out. Every time.
The course narrows the application of the 4D framework to three areas where AI changes the work most for educators.
AI as a thinking partner during course design. Use it to map a unit's learning objectives, draft a backwards-designed assessment plan, generate alternative sequencing options, or pressure-test your syllabus against the standards.
The key word is "thinking partner." You are not asking AI to design your course. You are asking it to surface options, raise questions, and pressure-test your decisions while you make them.
The fastest payoff for most teachers. Use AI to generate first drafts of handouts, study guides, vocabulary lists, example problems, comprehension questions, and review materials. Then apply Discernment hard. Verify everything. Adjust the reading level. Reword anything that does not sound like you.
Time savings: many educators report cutting weekly prep time in half on this category alone. The output gets better the more context you give the model (your students, your unit, your standards).
The hardest part of teaching in the AI era. If students can hand Claude an essay prompt and get a passable response in 30 seconds, the assessment is broken. Authentic assessments redesign what students do so AI cannot just do it for them.
The course covers what makes an assessment AI-resilient: in-class performance, personal application, oral defense, process documentation, and prompts that require the student's own context to answer well. This is the most important section in the course. If you redesign one assessment after taking this, the 24 minutes will have paid for themselves a hundred times over.
Here is the part of the course that is easy to skip and dangerous to skip. How you use AI in front of your students teaches them how to use AI when you are not there.
Students are watching. They see when you use AI to draft feedback. They see when you cite a source AI gave you without verifying it. They see when you ban AI in class and use it on every assignment you grade after hours. The Four D's apply to your own practice in front of them, not just to the framework you teach.
Tell students when AI helped you draft something. Show them what you did to verify it. Let them see the loop: Description, Discernment, Diligence.
This is the most durable lesson you teach them about AI, and the course makes the case explicitly.
