WHY I SHARED THIS VIDEO WITH YOU
I talk to leaders every week who know AI matters but cannot explain what is actually changing. They feel behind. They feel afraid. Some are ignoring it. Others are chasing every tool with no strategy.
I could record another AI overview. Instead, I found a clip where Tony Robbins interviews Robert Smith, founder of Vista Equity Partners, on what most people still do not understand about the shift to agentic AI.
The video is titled 99% of People Have No Idea What's About To Happen with AI from Tony Robbins. I am not claiming it as my teaching. I am curating it because it connects human grit, institutional evolution, and the agentic future in plain language you can act on.
PERSISTENCE HAS NO REPLACEMENT
Tony opens with a theme that runs through every success story: the willingness to never give up. Keep going no matter the obstacle.
Robert agrees. AI will automate tasks. Agents will run 24/7. But persistence, the refusal to quit when it gets hard, is not something you can download.
- AI handles repetition. You handle resolve.
- Agents execute tasks. Leaders set direction and stay in the fight.
- The obstacle is the filter. Most people stop at the first wall. Winners keep asking the next question.
RELENTLESS CURIOSITY
Robert names curiosity as a core driver of his success. Successful people in any field know they do not always have the answer. They ask the next set of questions.
From those questions come insights. From insights come intention and energy aimed at the right problem. Sometimes that problem is one they did not know they could solve until they stayed curious long enough to see it.
- Ask: "Tell me your origin story. How did you get here?"
- Listen for: people who describe overcoming, not just credentials.
- Coach vs solve: like chess or sports, help them discover the answer instead of handing it over.
GRIT: THE HUMAN EDGE
At Vista they call it grit. Hard to identify on a resume. But when you find someone with grit, they persist and they figure it out.
Grit is easy to fake when all boats are rising. Everybody looks like a genius in a bull market. Real grit shows up in downturns, market shifts, and when new technology enters the theater you have been operating in.
- When markets rise: discipline separates operators from passengers.
- When technology shifts: curiosity plus grit determines who converts and who gets displaced.
- As a parent or leader: prepare the child or team member for the journey. Do not pave the entire path for them.
INSTITUTIONS THAT EVOLVE
Robert's core operating model: build an institution that evolves. Enterprise software started on-premise. Then SaaS and hosted models took over.
Vista did not ignore the cloud shift. They built a conversion factory to move companies from on-premise to cloud. As far as Robert knows, they have converted more businesses than any institution on the planet.
WHAT AGENTIC AI ACTUALLY MEANS
Tony pauses the interview because most people do not know what "agentic" means. Robert explains it with a travel example.
- Traditional AI: You want a Paris restaurant tour. AI finds options. You still book, change, and manage.
- Agentic AI: The agent finds, books, adjusts, and rebooks. It does stuff. That is the shift.
- Marc Benioff's call: Salesforce's CEO told Robert this technology can do the work of hundreds of employees when deployed well.
Agents are not chatbots that suggest. They are workers that execute specific tasks on your behalf, around the clock.
THE AGENT MATH
Robert's portfolio touches 750 million users of software globally across 89 companies, 180 countries, and 70 industries.
Which creates new questions about work, wages, and stewardship. Robert names that honestly. As a fiduciary, his job is maximum efficacy on assets he controls. As a leader, your job is to position yourself and your team before the wave hits your industry.
ENTERPRISE VS CONSUMER AI
Consumer AI can book a Thai restaurant that closed three years ago and you shrug. Enterprise AI cannot operate at 99.5% on a wire transfer. You need 100%.
- Consumer: "Hey, find us a Thai place." Nine open, one closed. Good enough for dinner.
- Enterprise: Financial transactions, customer records, compliance workflows. Zero tolerance for "mostly right."
- Cybersecurity per agent: Each agent must be protected. Each must operate inside governed enterprise environments.
- Telemetry and guardrails: Agents must do exactly what you want. Not what you did not authorize.
AI FEEDS SOFTWARE
People ask: "Is AI going to eat software?" Robert's answer: No. AI is going to feed enterprise software.
- Code generation: Deployed across 100% of Vista companies. ~40% more effective today. Likely 80% next week. That is cost-side leverage.
- Revenue-side agents: Orchestration agent plus nine sub-agents doing the work of a customer service or sales rep, 24/7.
- Real example: Client changes jobs on LinkedIn. Human rep with 300 accounts may miss it. Agents detect immediately and trigger follow-up workflows.
- Microsoft partnership: Foundry environments, cybersecurity, telemetry. Enterprise infrastructure for agentic deployment.
BUILD THE CONVERSION FACTORY
Robert's playbook is repeatable: see the technology shift, build a factory, convert at scale. On-prem to cloud. Now hosted to agentic.
You may not run 89 companies. You still need a factory mindset: one pipeline that turns repetitive work into agentic workflows without breaking trust or quality.
HOW RICK CONNECTS THIS TO SYSTEMS
- AI adoption is a complex system. You cannot checklist your way through culture change. Run experiments. Course correct. See my How To Think In Systems guide →
- The anointing still needs systems before multiplication. Agents multiply output. They do not replace vision, character, or grace. Read the full guide →
- Build from identity, not fear. You are discovering destiny in a shifting world, not scrambling because you are late. Grace gives you clarity to act.
- Curiosity plus grit plus systems is the leadership stack AI cannot replicate. Use agents to buy back time. Use that time for assignment.
- Enterprise integrity matters. In federal contracting and ministry alike, trust is the platform. Deploy agents where accuracy and stewardship are locked in.

- I mapped the evolution: on-prem → hosted/SaaS → agentic.
- I understand enterprise vs consumer AI and why 100% accuracy matters.
- I identified one workflow where agents could buy back time this quarter.
- I ran the AI readiness diagnostic honestly.
- I connected AI to systems thinking, not hype (complex system, experiments).
- I reviewed security and governance before deploying any agent on real data.
- I declared faith-filled leadership over how I will steward this shift.
