Family, I am really big about discovering your purpose
Family, I am really big about discovering your purpose. I came across this article from 10X Life Plan that lines up well with some of what I have taught in Discovering Destiny (Today’s Word). I want to share their content with you AND share teaching points Rick Piña would say. Combined into one integrated package. Not a reprint. Their framework plus my destiny language, in one place you can run this week.
Their four signals help you read what God already prepared. My Discovering Destiny teaching keeps you from trying to invent what the Author already wrote. Then their S-I-E cycle helps you operate without confusing calling with readiness.
The four-signal framework (Gifts · Burdens · Doors · Confirmation) and the S-I-E cycle (Surrender · Identity · Execute) come from 10X Life Plan. Rick’s teaching lines below are from Discovering Destiny / Today’s Word. This package integrates both. Start with their articles: How to Discover Your Calling as a Christian Leader and How to Find Your Calling.
In This Guide
Rick’s teaching foundation
Discover, do not invent. These are exact lines from Discovering Destiny / Today’s Word.
Before you run the four signals, lock this posture. God made plans for you. Your job is not to create those plans. Your job is to discover them. Read these cards slowly. Let them correct the strain of trying to author what was already written.
“God made plans for you before the foundation of the world, and your job is not to create those plans but to discover them.”
“Your destiny is not something you invent. It is something you uncover.”
“You are not the author of your life. You are the one who gets to walk out what the Author already wrote.”
“Stop straining and stressing to create what God already finished.”
“God did not hide your destiny FROM you. He hid it FOR you.”
“What you did not earn by works, you cannot forfeit by failure.”
“You are not inventing it; you are discovering it.” / “Stop trying to create what the Artist already completed.”
“Your assignment had your name on it before you had a name.”
“Your worst decision and/or action did not cancel your purpose.”
Four signals (discover)
When all four converge on the same direction, calling is visible.
God prepared good works in advance (Ephesians 2:10). Culture says chase passion. Scripture says notice what God already prepared. Run these four signals slowly. Write under each one. After each signal, a short Destiny line from Rick so the framework stays tied to discover-not-invent language.
Gifts: What you do well that others affirm
Honest inventory. Not what you wish you were good at. What you actually do well that others affirm. Strength assessments, peer feedback, and the work that produces disproportionate result for the effort you invest all signal where the gifts are.
Be honest in both directions. False humility that refuses to name a gift is as off-track as pride that exaggerates one. Calling almost always runs through gifting.
- List 5 things you do well that others have affirmed (names help).
- Where do you get disproportionate results for the effort you put in?
- Where have you been shrinking a gift in false humility?
“God did not call you to something He did not build you for.”
Discovering Destiny / Today’s WordBurdens: What breaks your heart into ACTION
Nehemiah hears about the broken walls and weeps. The grief becomes the calling. Burdens that break the heart into action, not just into emotion, are calling signals.
The burden costs something. It shows up in prayer and wandering thoughts. It pulls you when nobody is paying you. Many people manufacture the burdens they think they should feel and ignore the ones they actually carry.
- What injustice or unmet need keeps returning in your prayers?
- What problem do you think about when no one is paying you?
- Where has a burden already cost you something (time, sleep, money, comfort)?
“Your assignment had your name on it before you had a name.”
Discovering Destiny / Today’s WordDoors: What God opens without you forcing it
Paul tries Asia. The Spirit forbids him. Then Macedonia opens. Calling almost always confirms through opportunity that converges with gifts and burdens. The right role opens. The right contact appears. Timing converges.
Notice open doors. Wait and prepare when gifts and burdens align but the door is shut. Forced doors are rarely calling. Faith is not the same as forcing.
- What doors have opened without you forcing them in the last 12 months?
- Where are you currently pushing a door that will not budge?
- If gifts + burdens align but the door is shut, what would “wait and prepare” look like for 90 days?
“Stop straining and stressing to create what God already finished.”
Discovering Destiny / Today’s WordConfirmation: What trusted believers independently see
Calling typically confirms through the body. Trusted believers (pastors, mentors, friends) independently see what you are sensing. If three mature leaders separately name the same direction, the confirmation signal is strong.
Ask. Lay your sense of calling in front of three trusted Christian leaders separately. If they diverge, give it more time and prayer. Do not skip this step and trust your internal sense alone.
- Name 3 mature believers you will ask separately this month.
- In one sentence, what direction will you put in front of them?
- What would count as confirmation vs. what would tell you to wait?
“God did not hide your destiny FROM you. He hid it FOR you.”
Discovering Destiny / Today’s WordFive-step discernment
Practical, not mystical. From the 10X Life Plan article.
- Settle discipleship / identity first. Before asking what you should do, anchor in who you are in Christ. Unsettled discipleship filters calling through insecurity, ambition, or fear.
- Inventory gifts, passions, experiences, convictions. Write what you do well, what breaks your heart into action, what shaped you, and what you will not surrender.
- Test vs Scripture, wise counsel, circumstance. Does it align with biblical priorities? Do wise brothers/sisters confirm or push back? Is the door opening or closing?
- Take the next obedient step. A lamp for your feet, not a floodlight for the decade (Psalm 119:105). Take the step you can see.
- Build long vision once you have direction. 25-year picture, then reverse-engineer to 5-year, 1-year, and 90-day plans.
Do not wait for a 25-year vision before you obey the next step. Clarity usually comes through action, not endless analysis. Lamp first. Map later. And remember: you are uncovering what God finished, not inventing a brand-new plan under pressure.
S-I-E + calling vs preparation
Discovering is not enough. You have to live in it. And readiness is not the same as calling.
Surrender
Call to a Person first (Matthew 4:19), not a position. “Come, follow Me.” Most calling confusion is downstream of unsettled surrender.
Identity
Who you are in Christ before what job. If identity is shaky, you will chase titles to prove worth. Settle sonship/daughtership first.
Execute
Next step in light. Faithfulness over ambition for the calling you wanted. God course-corrects a moving disciple faster than a stalled one.
“You can be completely right about your destiny and still not be ready to walk in it.” / “There is a calling, but then there is also a season of preparation.”
That is why open doors matter, and why forced doors fail. Gifts and burdens can be clear while God is still preparing you. Do not confuse delay with denial. Do not force what is not ready.
Business counts
Business is a legitimate calling. Marketplace work done unto the Lord serves Kingdom purposes. The question is not whether the category “counts as ministry.” The question is whether this specific work is the one God is calling you into right now.
Stuck?
Three common stalls. Name yours. Then move.
Depletion vs discernment
Often the issue is depletion, not discernment. A drained, overworked person cannot hear clearly. Sabbath. Sleep. Real rest. Then revisit the signals.
Fear of choosing
Fear of choosing wrong keeps people stuck for years. Make the most surrendered choice you can. God directs steps. Indecision is rarely more spiritual than imperfect obedience.
Calling is not what you wanted
Sometimes the calling is humbler, smaller, harder, or different than you hoped. Faithfulness in the calling you have been given is greater than ambition for the calling you wanted.
“What you did not earn by works, you cannot forfeit by failure.” / “Your worst decision and/or action did not cancel your purpose.”
Discovering Destiny / Today’s WordThis week
Three moves. Do them before you overthink the PDF.
- Gifts inventory. Write 5 gifts others affirm. Be honest. No false humility. No pride theater.
- 60-minute talk. Schedule one conversation with a trusted brother or sister about what you sense God calling you to.
- One-sentence draft. Write one sentence of what you sense God calling you to. Bring it to prayer for two weeks. Watch what shifts.
“I sense God calling me to ________ for ________, using ________, in this season of ________.”
Close
Family, run the four signals. Hold the Destiny posture: discover, do not invent. Live the S-I-E cycle. And if you are right about the calling but not ready yet, stay in preparation without forcing the door.
