Measure
Inches, decimal. Caliper for everything under 6", tape for the rest.
Caliper in 30 seconds
Zero it: close the jaws all the way, press ZERO. Inches: press the in/mm button until it reads inches; 0.75 means 3/4.
Big jaws (bottom): measure the thickness of a board or the outside of something. Close them on it like a clamp.
Small tips (top): measure the inside of a hole. Put them in, open until they touch both edges.
Hold it square to the surface, take the reading twice, write two decimals.
Words on this page
Hole / cutout: the rectangular opening in the tabletop the power box sits in.
Bezel / frame / flange: the flat rim around the box that sits on top of the table and hides the hole edge.
Rabbet: a shallow step cut around the hole so the frame sits down flush.
Top thickness: how thick the tabletop board is, top face to bottom face.
Clearance below: empty space under the top before you hit metal or plastic.
Hardwired: wired straight into the building with no plug.

Old unit make / modelLook on the face of the silver box, its underside, and the cord for a sticker or molded text. Photograph it. If we can name the model, its spec sheet tells us the hole size.
Hole WIDTH, unit removedThe hole is what is left in the tabletop after the old box comes out. Width = the long side. Use the small INSIDE jaws on top of the caliper: put them in the hole, open until they touch both inside edges, read. Do it near the left end, middle, right end. If the box cannot come out, measure the old frame instead and write "unit in".
Hole HEIGHT, unit removedThe short side of the hole, same way, three spots (front to back).
CornersLook at the four corners of the hole. Sharp 90 degrees = write "square". Rounded = estimate the curve with a coin: a dime is about 0.35, a quarter about 0.48.
Ledge / rabbet around hole?Run a fingernail around the edge of the hole. If there is a step down (a shallow shelf cut lower than the tabletop so the old frame sat into it), that is a rabbet. Write how wide the shelf is and how far it steps down. If the top is flat right up to the hole, write "none".
TOP THICKNESS at raw edgeHow thick the tabletop board is. Measure it INSIDE the hole where you can see the raw cut edge, not at the outer edge of the table (the plastic edge band is often thicker than the board). Close the big OUTSIDE jaws on the board like a clamp, top surface to bottom surface, and read. 0.75 or less: good. More than 0.75: the Legrand unit will not clamp on. Most important number of the day.
Old bezel footprint / shadow to coverThe old silver frame was about 8 1/4 x 4 1/2. After it comes off, look for a lighter or dirtier rectangle, an adhesive ring, or screw holes around the hole. Measure the outside of whatever mark our new plate has to hide. Write W x H.
Hole center to BACK edgeTape measure from the middle of the hole straight back to the rear edge of the tabletop.
Hole center to LEFT edgeSame, from the middle of the hole to the left end of the table. Tells us whether the hole is centered.
Clearance below topKneel and look under the table at the hole. Measure from the underside of the tabletop straight down to the first thing in the way (metal rail, plastic tray, panel). The new box hangs 2 1/8 (2.125) below the top, so you need more than that.
Plug or hardwired? Cord goes where?Follow the cord from the box. Ends in a normal wall plug = "plug". Disappears into a metal box, down a leg, or into the floor with no plug = "hardwired". Write where it goes.
Held by clamps / screws / adhesiveLook under the box. Small screws that tighten a tab against the underside of the board = "clamps". Wood screws through the top frame = "screws". Stuck down with tape or glue and nothing else = "adhesive".
Minutes to remove one unitStart the phone stopwatch when you first touch the box; stop when it is out and the cord is free. Note if two people were needed.

Anything over 0.75 is a problem. Write it down even if it looks the same as the last one.

Top thicknessCaliper the tabletop board at the outer edge with the big outside jaws. If there is a plastic edge band, say so: the board inside may be thinner. Better: find any raw edge (a cable hole, a chipped spot) and measure there.
Under the topLook or crawl under. Write down anything within a hand's width of where the hole would go: the black steel rail, plastic trays, a panel, wires. That is what a router would hit.
Agreed cutout spotAsk Jared or Bobby where they want the new hole, usually the same spot as the powered tables (centered, near the back edge). Tape from the back edge and from the table center to that spot.
Clearance below at that spotUnderside of the top straight down to the first obstruction at the agreed spot. Need more than 2.125.
AllSteel model labelUnder the top, on the frame, or inside a leg. Usually a white or foil sticker with a model number and a date. Photograph it.
Rolls / folds / flips?Wheels on the legs? Does the top fold or tip up to nest? A table that moves needs a cord basket under the top instead of clips on a leg.

Wall outlets / floor boxesCount wall outlet plates (each plate = 1) and any metal outlet boxes set into the floor. Every new table box needs somewhere to plug in.
Farthest table to outlet (ft)Pick the table farthest from any outlet. Tape from where its box would be to the nearest outlet, along the path a cord would actually run. Our cord is 10 ft.
Floor: carpet / VCT / otherCarpet tile, tile (VCT), or something else. Decides whether cords can cross the floor.
