WHY THIS IS ON PATREON
This is my ALPFA LEAD opening keynote. Not a curated clip from someone else.
I taught this for the ALPFA LEAD Program in Charlotte. The title is The Leadership Inflection Point. The subtitle is the hard truth: what got you here won't get you there.
Patreon members get the video, the 32-slide deck, and this workbook so you can locate your level and climb on purpose.
THE PREMISE
Whatever got you here is not what gets you to the next level.
- Think like the next level. Your current thinking built your current ceiling.
- Communicate like the next level. Language is a tell. Leadership hears how you speak before they promote you.
- Operate under new paradigms. Same habits, same results. New level requires new operating rules.
THE FOUR LEVELS OF VALUE
Framework credit: Myron Golden's Four Levels of Value. I teach it because the marketplace already pays this way.
- 01 Implementation: execute the vision according to the plan.
- 02 Unification: make sure the implementers implement.
- 03 Communication: take the vision and cast it, one to many.
- 04 Imagination: chart where we are going and what it takes to get there.
LEVEL 1: IMPLEMENTATION
Individual contributors who execute the tasks. Keyboard. Spreadsheet. Broom. Playing the instrument.
- Every vision on earth gets executed by an implementer.
- The ceiling: you can be the best here and still be capped. Capped compensation. Capped impact.
- People who refuse to leave the keyboard stay at that level.
- The climb: think outcomes, not tasks.
- Teach your excellence to others.
- Do your portion so well that doers one day do for you.
LEVEL 2: UNIFICATION
Managers and directors. You are given implementers. Your job is that the implementers implement.
- The shift: the conductor does not play the instrument. From playing the instrument to playing the people.
- Twelve direct reports means twelve sets of outcomes. You are not paid to do those tasks anymore.
- The climb: translate the vision one level above you before anyone asks.
- Learn how VPs think, communicate, and talk. Master your portion. Do not covet your peers' portion.
LEVEL 3: COMMUNICATION
VPs and SVPs. Offsites and executive retreats. Your first exposure to the C-suite. You hear the vision directly from the visionaries.
- The job: translate what came down into what teams can execute. Centralized vision. Decentralized execution.
- Down: translate the vision so your teams can execute it.
- Up: say what your division is doing, in your boss's language.
- Out: build consensus with peers, partners, and stakeholders.
- The climb: come back from every offsite with a translation and a point of view. Guard thinking time. Produce vision-level thinking before anyone asks.
LEVEL 4: IMAGINATION
The C-suite and founders. Paid to think. They chart where we are going and what it takes to get there.
- 36 months. Three big ideas. Three big things. Not fifty.
- People. Numbers. Culture. At level one your week is 22 tasks. At the top it is three goals.
- Anybody can steer the ship. It takes a visionary to chart the course.
THE MARKETPLACE PAYS YOUR LEVEL
Not effort. Not tenure. Not how much you care.
- Each level maxes out at a pay range.
- Keep moving up the value chain or accept the ceiling.
- 15, 18, 22 years in and still wondering why you are not in the room? Check your level, not your calendar.
LOCATE YOURSELF
Where are you really? Not your title. Your level.
- The tell: still not invited to the offsite. The invite list tells you your level.
- Strategic: thinking it.
- Operational: implementing the strategy.
- Tactical: putting out fires.
Think like your leadership. Communicate like your leadership. Make it obvious you already belong. Every business has a language. Learn your leadership's lexicon.
GET NOTICED: LINKEDIN PLAYBOOK
If you never get noticed, you're not going to get promoted. Nobody at your company controls your LinkedIn.
- 01 Research your company's direction on your own time.
- 02 Post your thoughts.
- 03 Tag your company and your boss.
- 04 Their peers see it.
Help me write one LinkedIn post that shows I already think at the next level. Context: - Company: [company] - My role: [role] - Level I want to be seen at: [Unification / Communication / Imagination] - One insight about where the company is going: [insight] Requirements: 1) Bottom line in the first two lines 2) Speak in leadership language, not task language 3) End with one clear point of view 4) Include a natural place to tag my company and my boss 5) No fluff. No em dashes. Direct and confident.
THE WHOLE LEADER
The next level is not just professional.
- Spiritual. Physical. Mental. The next level requires all three.
- Add a fourth: Family. If you get to the end of your career without your family, you failed.
- Systems before scale. Climbing levels without clarity burns people. See The Anointing Needs Systems Before Multiplication.
- Centralized vision, decentralized execution is Level 3 in shoe leather. See Centralized Vision, Decentralized Execution.
LEVEL DIAGNOSTIC
Answer honestly. Your responses save in your browser.
